Games at Halesowen Library 4 November

On 4th November Steve H & I will be at Halesowen Library from about 1 - 3pm with a selection of games that we play. These will be a mixture of longer games that are really just for show and shorter games that we hope to be able to demonstrate to passers by who maybe interested in these sorts of games.

This is part of International Games Week with events taking place in libraries across the world.

Twitter

After steadfastly resisting social media all this time, I have created an account on Twitter in the name of the club https://twitter.com/halesowenBG, only 3 tweets so far, although I notice there is a follower. I've also added a widget on the website homepage, although I'll have to tidy that up a bit as it's starting to become a bit cluttered.

Labels & Search

Just a note to say that I've deleted all the game specific labels that were attached to posts and just kept to labels describing particular kinds of post. I've added an index of these to the blog in the top right corner of the page. The game labels had got out of hand and I'd stopped adding new ones anyway.

If you want to find posts referring to specific games, they can be found using the search box which is above the subject index and will search both the blog and also the main website, although blog posts can be isolated by clicking on Blog at the top of the search results.

Christmas & New Year

Last night was the last Wednesday session of the year due to next Wednesday being Christmas Day. The following week is New Year's Day when it is intended that there be a normal meeting.

A number of people have expressed an interest so what will happen is that Dave D will be there at the normal time and if no one else turns up he will go home. All this is subject to there not being a thick layer of snow on the ground.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year who read this.

Halesowen Boardgamers is moving

After meeting at the Townsend Social Club (previously the Conservative Club) since the 20th Century. Halesowen Boardgamers is moving to a new venue.

Starting from 20 November we will now meet at the Stag & Three Horseshoes pub. This is on the Birmingham side of Halesowen at the top of Mucklow Hill. A room has been arranged on the upper floor which is several times larger than our previous location and will make it possible to run more than three games at the same time, while it should also be easy to move around if someone needs to get out of the room without having to squeeze between the backs of chairs. It should also be possible to stay until around 11:30 allowing the possibility for slightly longer games to be played if required.

There is separate access from the outside of the pub at the back,  so it won't be necessary to lug bags through the bar area and we will also have access to the bar from inside. Car Parking is at the front and back of the pub and (from an approximate count using Google's satellite photography) looks to support 80 to 90 cars which should be enough to accommodate both ourselves and the pub's other clientèle.

Based on current attendances, there should be no need to change the £1 weekly charge.

For further location information see our website here or the pub's site here. Any queries contact Dave D.

Merry Xmas

Just a note that as next Wednesday is Boxing Day, there won't be a club meeting, I'll be posting my usual summary at some time in the near future, but in the meantime, here's a listing of the games we played over the year.

Here's wishing anyone reading this a Merry Xmas & Happy New Year.

Web Sites

The week before last, I noticed that our halesowenboardgamers.org.uk domain was no longer working and a quick check showed that it was available. Gordon confirmed that he let the registration lapse about a month back in the knowledge that nobody else would want it, so we could re-register if we wanted it.

I discussed it with Mike, who agreed that we ought to have the domain back due to a number of links that pointed to the address and coincidentally he had a mail last week from Jeremy Tullet regarding someone who'd tried to use the link from QLA. I was also aware that we'd just had some more T-shirts produced with the address on them.

Anyway as of Friday, the address is active again, although there is only a single page with links elsewhere at the moment, until I get my head round some web page design software. Also note that this blog is now blog.halesowenboardgamers.org.uk (the blogspot address redirects), also the stats are on stats.halesowenboardgamers.org.uk, although they are also still in my Virgin web space as I don't know how to set a redirect from there.

T Shirts

I started to write this last week and then got sidetracked, but have been just been reminded seeing Mike's email. Mike organised the production of the T shirts and we charged £2 each, with the remainder coming out of club funds, the shirt is shown below (design by former member Luke Morris).

This is really for those who may not have seen Mike's mail, but may read this. If you're interested and have seen the mail, reply to that, otherwise reply here or use one of the contacts on the Contact page (Members Only).

Game Labels

I've started to go back through the posts and add labels where they refer to some of the more often played games. You can see the list so far down the side.

Should make it easy to find plays for these games without hunting all through the old posts.

First Post

The primary purpose of this blog is as a repository of session summaries for HalesowenBoardgamers, which have previously been sent out by Gordon and collected together on his club website. These have sometimes generated a certain amount of comment. In future we intend to put the summaries here, which will have the advantage of getting them on the web without any further action and also mean that if people want to read what we've been playing they can come here and not have a load of mails clogging up their inboxes.

I've set up the blog and am currently the only poster, but I will be inviting other regular member of the group to also become contributors. As I understand it anyone should be able to add comments to existing posts.

The layout will no doubt change over the coming time, as I fiddle about with it.
