Games Played 20 November 2013

This was the first meeting at out new venue, the Stag & Three Horseshoes, with 11 people in attendance and expressing favourable first impressions. The extra space is great, although we did learn that there is a right way to lift the tables when moving them.

Although the place had changed, the games were very much the usual suspects being (as at this moment 5 of the top 6 games played this year), although going on longer. We have more available time in the new place and in this case the last players didn't leave until around 11:30. If this is the regular situation, then the recorded player hours are going to rise regardless of whether we get more people or not.

The Power Grid game was played on the Baden-Wuttemberg board at Mike's request. I didn't build on the last turn, knowing I was guaranteed second place regardless and I couldn't build above 16, which would make no difference if Mike could end the game and would give a player order adavantage over him for the following turn if he couldn't. As it happens he could. I think I lost a chance of winning early on when I felt I was forced to buy an extra plant (#28), I wouldn't normally have done so but there was a genuine chance that coal would be exhausted, meaning that I couldn't run plant 25.

The game of San Juan was very close, Mike scoring heavily with Guild Hall and a bit in the Harbour, Steve had the Cathedral and also a Harbour, while I scored with City Hall and a large amount of cards stashed in the Bank.
