Session Report – 3 February 2010

7 this week.

On the 4 player table, we had a rematch of World Without End from the previous week. Dave and Andrew tried the same medical route as the week before, but this time things went the way of the builders. Steve built up a good lead, but I almost pegged him back at the end. I've now played this 3 times and managed to finish second in each, I hope that's not going to become a habit.

World Without End 110 mins.

On the other table, the game was Steam, Martin Wallace's updating of Age of Steam, this being its first appearance on the table at the club. I took part in a play test of this a couple of years back which also included Gordon and thought the new version was a bit of improvement over the original. That was playing with what I believe has become known as the standard game, which I think is what was played here. Listening in on the comments I get the impression that Mike is still no great fan of the game.

Steam 160 mins.

  1. Steam is a game I have been on the verge of buying but have never quiet got around to doing so. I know Andy is a big fan and I seem to agree with his preferences.

Ra the Dice Game looks interesting but I can see it takes uncomfortably close to the time taken to play the actual game. Still there are times when there is time for a 45 minute game and not an hour long game.

  2. I think Steam's great fun. I finished well behind partly because I started on the right side of the board in the hope that the others would leave me alone initially.

Andy took up the middle with Mike on the left. I moved a lot of goods initially, but Andy extended the middle to both sides and I got locked in a bit, while Mike played more of a waiting game.

Andy's experience definitely showed as he went for the win. I'd like to try the extended game sometime just to see how it compares. I can see why Mike thinks it's a bit dry, but I actually think it's reasonably light for Martin Wallace. The mechanisms are all pretty straightforward with the usual MW 'loans-are-good-to-start-but-penalise-you-later' idea executed simply and clearly.

    A good game.
