Games Played 21 May 2014

14 people in attendance this week, a new attendee being Kevin, who I understand was invited along by Steve W. 7 games were played across 4 tables.

When I arrived I found Power Grid already being set up by Bob & Jonathan, so I happily joined in on that one. This was a new set using the USA map which I have not played since April 2008, so it was a bit of a blast from the past.

We played in the 2 eastern areas and the North Central area. Being a 3 player game, there was not a great deal of contention for city sites, everyone would have access to every city at game end. Bob was in the hunt for most of the game, but in the final round fell short on capacity, buying the Green 44 plant with 5 capacity when he really needed more, he also over bought fuel, thinking that there would be an extra round, I actually had the money to end the game in the previous round had the cities been available (we were still in step 2 at that point, the step 3 card coming up in the bureaucracy phase) and the small fact that even if they were I wouldn't have won at that point. Jonathan suffered from buying plant 30 (3 trash powers 6), this would have been a good deal a few turns later (especially as a number of trash plants had been thrown out in the discards at the beginning), but at the time he bought it the fuel price had not had time to drop sufficiently and would not fall further due to fuel purchase.

After Power Grid we played Guillotine, I had a good start picking up the Count and Countess with a double feature and later picked up both the King and Queen. The final day was somewhat stretched out as extra nobles kept getting added to the end of the line.

Elsewhere, Cosmic Encounter was played, this being the newish FFG version of the game, I think being brought by Kevin. I have thought every now and then of bringing along my battered old Eon copy. I think a good time was had with this, but it seemed to run long.

Also played were Belfort & Tzolk'in with the day rounded off as 2 groups combined for Heckmeck. Mike left after the first game and left his copy for the others. I watched the end of that so as to pick up the scores and there was a rules mistake in that second game concerning when a roll was failed.I think maybe Mike would have picked this up in the earlier game.
